Had no clue what this was as a kid. Thought it was some kind of cartoon face, and was around so often that I never really asked to confirm.
I know now that it was a test signal to allow you to calibrate your television and showed up when regular transmission went off. Yes, there was a time when we didn’t have 24-hour entertainment and even TV took a break.
